LIFE PIECES TO MASTERPIECES RECEIVES DR. ASA G. HILLIARD MODEL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD
Washington, DC; 18 April 2014 – Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM/Life Pieces) has been named one of two recipients of the College Board’s 2014 Dr. Asa G. Hilliard Model of Excellence Award. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have developed successful methodologies that have positively impacted countless African American students. Each recipient represents a model that can be replicated by others working to make a difference in the lives of youth.
The Model of Excellence Award honors the legacy of Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, who exemplified commitment to African American education through a wide-ranging career that included work as a teacher, psychologist, historian, and education consultant.
The award will be presented on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 as part of the College Board’s A Dream Deferred: The Future of African American Education conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference brings together experts and practitioners to discuss new solutions and share best practices to improve educational opportunities for African American students.
Mary Brown, LPTM’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, will be present to accept the award on behalf of the organization. Also receiving the award will be Dr. Joseph Johnson, Jr. of the National Center for Urban School Transformation at San Diego State University.
Founded in 1996, Life Pieces To Masterpieces uses artistic expression to develop character and leadership, unlock potential, and prepare African American boys and young men to transform their lives and communities. The LPTM Human Development System gives Apprentices the tools to navigate through challenging circumstances and provides opportunities for growth within an environment of love, security, and expression.
Life Pieces To Masterpieces serves youth in DC’s Wards 7 and 8, where under 40% of African American boys graduate from high school. For the past seven years, 100% of Life Pieces senior Apprentices have graduated from high school and gone on to college or post-secondary training.
