Grant from company’s District of Play youth sports campaign fuels the third season of LPTM’s human-development-through-basketball program, engaging 50 middle school boys across Washington D.C.’s Ward 7 and 8
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 14, 2026) – Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM) has received a $25,000 grant from Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE)’s District of Play youth sports campaign to power the 2026 summer season of Basketball and Beyond, LPTM’s human-development-through-basketball program for middle school boys in Washington D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8. Now in its third season, the six-week program is offered at no cost to participants and their families, running daily, Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at H.D. Woodson High School in Ward 7, engaging 50 “Apprentice-Athletes” in learning the art of basketball while developing the mindset, skills, and hearts of leaders — both on the court and in life.
LPTM’s Basketball and Beyond aligns directly with the District of Play platform- a multi-million-dollar, multi-year investment in safe play spaces, essential equipment, and community engagement for youth in the nation’s capital. The grant helps apprentice- athletes discover their innate abilities and the confidence to turn challenges into possibilities. The need is clear: Only 51 percent of children living in Wards 7 and 8 in D.C. play sports compared to 84 percent of youth in other more affluent wards, and high schools in Wards 7 and 8 offer roughly two fewer sports than the rest of the city. Basketball and Beyond is built precisely for that gap.
The values, principles, and practices that have produced a 100 percent high school graduation rate for LPTM participants for 15 years running are interwoven into every aspect of the program. Led by coaches trained in LPTM’s time-tested Human Development System (HDS), every warm-up, scrimmage, and conversation challenges young men to think creatively about how they play, lead, and solve problems. They come to know they are valuable, powerful, and capable — on and off the court. This season, Basketball and Beyond welcomes nationally recognized coach and legendary DMV basketball star Duane Simpkins, head coach of the American University’s men’s basketball team. The partnership with Coach Simpkins builds on a relationship between Life Pieces To Masterpieces and American University that spans more than 15 years.
“Life Pieces To Masterpieces has a remarkable track record of helping young people develop the skills, confidence, and support systems they need to succeed, and Basketball and Beyond’s impact is a direct reflection of these efforts,” said Monica Dixon, President of External Affairs and Chief Administrative Officer, MSE. “Through this grant, MSE is proud to advance District of Play’s mission and support LPTM’s programs that create lasting impact for young people and families throughout the District.”
“For 30 years, we’ve done this work close to the ground in Wards 7 and 8. To see it elevated on the Monumental Sports landscape through District of Play is a blessing — for our apprentice-athletes, their families, and our whole community,” said Mary Brown, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Life Pieces To Masterpieces.
The 2026 season is already underway at H.D. Woodson High School, where 50 middle school boys are spending six weeks pairing daily academic enhancement and personal development with on- court training. It is the latest chapter in LPTM’s 30th anniversary year- three decades of guiding young men from the District’s most marginalized communities to graduate high school and enter college and the workforce as leaders and contributors to their communities.
Launched in 2024 as part of MSE’s deal with the District of Columbia to transform Capital One Arena, District of Play is the company’s commitment to expanding access to youth sports and wellness across D.C. The platform invests in youth sports infrastructure, provides vital play spaces and equipment, and drives community impact through the NHL’s Washington Capitals, NBA’s Washington Wizards and its G-League affiliate Capital City Go-Go, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, the Monumental Sports Network, and the MSE Foundation. In its first year, the initiative reached more than 200,000 students, coaches, and parents across the D.C. region, receiving national recognition from the ESPN ESPY Sports Humanitarian Awards and Fight for Children.
